place sans memory: gilcrease
2021: An art project in process.
Since February 2019, I've been documenting seasonal and biological aspects of this location through photography. This is in tandem with ongoing historical research of Thomas Gilcrease and the land and place we presently call Gilcrease Museum.
Over the past three years I've explored the grounds weekly, typically through Sunday morning photo shoots, working to develop a better understanding of the land as an ever changing cultural artifact of the City of Tulsa.
The last and only Biological Assessment of the Gilcrease Site was conducted nearly 30 years ago by the staff of the Mary K. Oxley Nature Center, their results are located here.. This assessment provided me with a working model helping me to identify the basic. topographical features and layout of the acreage. As I've traversed the property, I've developed a more visceral understanding of the man made & natural elements that make up this small ecosystem.
My concept is to weave the disparate threads of memory and history through my images, observations and research..
I am not a scientist nor a historian; at heart this is a poetic study of place, seen through the eyes of a Tulsa artist.
With the closing of the Museum in July 2021, my approach to the work will enter a new quasi public. phase since the changes ahead will dramatically alter the physicality, perception and the tranquility of Gilcrease for the foreseeable future..
Updates are ongoing.
